Michael Phelps sets record, Canada wins three more bronze medals on dramatic day
LONDON - Michael Phelps set an Olympic record and Canada added three more medals to its tally at London Games on Tuesday.
Phelps, the American swimming superstar, picked up the 18th and 19th medals of his career with a silver in the 200-metre butterfly and a gold with his teammates in the 4x200-metre freestyle to pass Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's all-time mark.
"I've put my mind to doing something that nobody had ever done before," said Phelps, who has won 15 Olympic gold medals. "This has been an amazing ride."
Meanwhile, the Canadian team, which didn't win a medal until Day 8 of the Beijing Games, broke through early in London and continued its medal haul.
Two days after divers Emilie Heymans and Jennifer Abel gave Canada its first podium of the Games with a third-place finish in the women's three-metre synchro, teammates Roseline Filion and Meaghan Benfeito got things going Tuesday in the 10-metre synchronized event.
About 30 minutes later, Antoine Valois-Fortier surprised many by taking bronze Cheap Soccer Jerseys in men's judo. And within the hour, weightlifter Christine Girard was also climbing the podium with a bronze of her own.
"It is very hard to describe how I feel," Girard said. "Four years ago in Beijing I came fourth and since then I have spent the past four years training through injuries and various changes in my life to get to this moment."
Canada sits 13th in the overall medal standings just behind Britain, which France Euro 2012 Jersey has two silver and two bronze. Canadian officials said before the Games that they were hoping for a top-12 finish overall.
Another highlight on a dramatic day for Canada was Milos Raonic's marathon 6-3, 3-6, 25-23 loss in tennis to France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The third set was the longest in Olympic history, but was of little comfort to Raonic.
"I've been sort of knocking on the door," Raonic said of his recent play. "Hopefully, next time around, I can just kick it down."
Meanwhile, the Canadian women's soccer team stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to stun Sweden 2-2 and advance to the quarter-finals, where they will take on Olympic host Great Britain on Friday.
Canada coach John Herdman relished the chance to play a game in his hometown of Newcastle against the Swedes.
"You're in your hometown, you're on your home patch, you've got your family here," Herdman said. "I wanted to make sure we got something out of this game."
Survivors: No 2nd car in deadly Cuba car crash
HAVANA — Two Europeans who were traveling with prominent Cuban dissident Oswaldo Paya when he died in a car accident said Monday that no second vehicle was involved, denying speculation that the crash might not have been accidental.
In a video recording shown to international journalists summoned to a news conference, Spanish citizen Angel Carromero backed up investigators' report last week saying he slammed on the brakes after unexpectedly entering an unpaved construction zone.
"I braked because I saw the hole and the sand. I lost control of the car because cheap silver glitter toms we had entered an area with gravel. ... No vehicle hit us from behind," said Carromero, who was driving the car when it crashed July 22 in the eastern province of Granma.
Investigators said Paya died instantly from severe head trauma, and another dissident, Harold Cepero, died later at a local hospital. Authorities said they were not wearing their seatbelts and were sitting in the subcompact rental car's rear, which sustained the brunt of the impact when it skidded into a tree at high speed.
Carromero discounted early reports, which circulated among dissidents and were picked up by some foreign media, alleging that a second vehicle was pursuing them and might have even forced them off the road. Dissidents and Paya's family demanded a transparent investigation.
"I ask the international community to please focus on getting me out of here and not use a traffic accident, which could have happened to anyone, for political purposes," Carromero said.
Swedish citizen Jens Aron Modig, who was riding in the passenger's seat, said he was sleeping at the time of the accident but confirmed the story. In an appearance before reporters, he also denied accounts alleging he had sent text messages to people in Sweden saying the vehicle was being followed.
Carromero and Modig, members of center-right political parties in their home countries, entered Cuba on tourist visas but acknowledged working with dissidents. Modig said he first came to Cuba in 2009 to meet with dissidents, and on this trip they were to meet with Paya, give him 4,000 euros ($4,900) for his opposition work and help organize dissident political youth groups.
Cuba calls the government opponents "counterrevolutionaries" and accuses them of accepting foreign funding to undermine the Communist government.
Modig offered an apology for bringing money to the dissidents.
"I understand that these activities are not legal in Cuba and I would like to apologize for having come to this country Toms Shoes Sale to realize illicit activities," he said, according to a Spanish translation of his comments.
Cuban authorities have suggested that Carromero could face prosecution in relation to the crash.
The Spanish Embassy said last week that it was awaiting word from prosecutors. Modig said Monday he did not know when he might return to Sweden.
Paya, 60, was a leading government opponent who in the late 1990s and early 2000s headed up the Varela Project petition drive, which gathered thousands of signatures urging political opening.
It was considered the biggest nonviolent challenge to decades of Communist government, and the European Union selected recognized Pay with its Sakharov human rights prize in 2002.

China ascends to number two on Fortune 500
Two years after eclipsing Japan as the world's second-largest economy, China stole the number-two spot on the Fortune 500 list of the biggest global companies from its Asian rival.
In its annual revenue rankings, Fortune magazine said that China overtook Japan for the first time, landing 73 companies on the list compared with Japan's 68 companies.
Anglo-Dutch energy giant Royal Dutch Shell retook the top spot, knocking off US retail titan Wal-Mart from a two-year reign with 2011 revenues of $484.5 billion, up 28.1 percent from 2010.
The remaining members of the top 10 are, in descending order: ExxonMobil (US); Wal-Mart Stores (US); Britain's BP; Chinese companies Sinopec Group, China National Petroleum and State Grid; Chevron (US); ConocoPhillips (US) and Japan's Toyota Motor.
"Although the US still hosts the lion's share of Global 500 corporations, no country has lost Herre Nike Free Run 3
more companies during the last decade. There are 132 US-headquartered businesses on this year's list, down from 197 a decade ago," the US business magazine said.
The rankings and composition of the list reflected the shifting global landscape as the United States faces mounting competition from foreign rivals.
China added 12 companies to the list this year, while the number of European firms fell to 161 amid the eurozone debt crisis, from 172 in 2011.
"One of the more remarkable shifts has been in the number of Chinese companies on the list," Fortune said, pointing out there were only 11 Chinese firms on the Global 500 in 2002, while the number of Japanese companies has fallen from 88.
Still, the magazine said, Tokyo hosts 48 Global 500 company headquarters, more than any other city. "Despite the Fukushima disaster and two decades of slow growth, it's way too soon to count Japan out."
Eight energy businesses dominated the Fortune 500's top 10. Commercial banks accounted for the second-largest industry on the Global 500 and the auto industry was in third place.
"Despite financial turmoil in Europe and disasters in Herre Nike Free Hyper TR
Japan, the world's largest corporations had record profits and revenues in 2011," Fortune said.
In total, the Global 500 companies posted record revenues of $29.5 trillion, up 13.2 percent over 2010.
Corporations around the world "continue to be adept at wringing productivity out of their workers," Fortune said.
Total employment at the Global 500 increased by 4.9 percent, to 60.7 million, last year, but revenue per worker grew at almost twice that rate, climbing to $463,212.
"Total profits rose seven percent, to $1.6 trillion, roughly equal to the gross domestic product of India," Fortune said.
Two Indian companies made the top 100 list: state-run Indian Oil, ranked at 83, and Reliance Industries, in the 99th slot.
US gadgets giant Apple shot up 56 spots from last year, landing at number 55. The California-based maker of the hot-selling iPhone, iPad and other gadgets posted 2011 revenues of almost $108.3 billion, a 66 percent rise over 2010.

Venezuelan tribe angry at "sacred" stone in Berlin
BERLIN (Reuters) - Wolfgang von Schwarzenfeld's sculptures in a Berlin park were meant to promote world peace, but the 79-year-old German now finds himself at war with a Venezuelan tribe which accuses him of stealing a sacred pink stone known to them as "Grandmother".
The Venezuelan government is championing the Pemon Indians of the "Gran Sabana" region by demanding the return of the polished stone from Berlin's Tiergarten park - putting the German government in something of a dilemma.
With Caracas calling it robbery, and the sculptor arguing that the stone was a legal gift, the monolith is emitting more negative energy than its esoteric fans in Berlin are used to.
Blissfully unaware of the diplomatic tug-of-war, Robert, a Berlin Nike Free Run gardener, got off his bicycle to light joss sticks among the stones from five continents that form the "Global Stone Project", awaiting friends for an afternoon shamanic ritual.
But newly arrived Venezuelan tourists Grecia Melendez and Juan Carlos Brozoski knew all about the war of the stone and suspected there were political motives behind the protests.
"(President Hugo) Chavez always wants a conflict with someone," said 32-year-old Melendez, taking photos of the 12 cubic meter stone, which is engraved with the word "love" in different languages - and graffiti with couples' names and hearts.
Von Schwarzenfeld, a frail figure with whispy white hair and scuffed brown shoes, waved a sheaf of documents authorizing the removal of the stone from the Canaima National Park in 1998.
As with all the stones arranged in a circle in Berlin, a "sister" stone remained behind. Every summer solstice, their burnished surfaces reflect the sun "as a symbol of a united mankind, hopefully one day in peace", he said.
The project was inaugurated in 1999 near Berlin's landmark Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburg Gate. As children played among the stones, Von Schwarzenfeld defied Venezuela to take back what he called a "gift to Berlin" from former president Rafael Caldera.
"Peace for me does not mean the absence of conflict," said the artist, undeterred by threats and what he too suspects are "political motivations" behind the tussle over the stone.
ALL THE ANTS YOU CAN EAT
A video circulated on Youtube has mobilized public opinion in Venezuela, recounting the mythical origins of the Kueka (grandmother in the Pemon language) and its pair, and voicing locals' sense of loss.
"This man decided to take the Kueka without caring about its cultural value for the Pemon community," Venezuelan activist and ecologist Any Alarcon says in the video.
Culture Minister Pedro Calzadilla told state television the donation was "illegitimate" because the stone was part of "the cultural patrimony of the (Pemon) community". Prosecutors are looking into the stone's removal because "whoever authorized the removal of the Grandmother committed a crime", he said.
After Pemon tribespeople demonstrated outside Germany's embassy last week with spears, feather headdresses and banners saying "The Pemon People Want Our Wise Grandmother Back", the German envoy promised to relay their feelings to Berlin, while telling them it would be no easy task to return the stone.
German Foreign ministry spokesman Andreas Peschke said Berlin wanted a solution "agreed by all sides - Venezuela, the indigenous groups, the artist and the city of Berlin".
Von Schwarzenfeld was not convinced, saying the stone's removal would sacrifice "the 15 years of my life and all the money I spent. If it is taken away, it ruins the whole project."
Beside him stood German anthropologist Bruno Illius, who has studied the Nike Free tilbud Pemon tribe for two decades. He said there was "no such thing as a 'holy stone' for the Pemones, just small magical stones with practical purposes, like helping you to catch fish".
Illius rubbished stories about the stone's removal bringing misfortune on the tribe, like drought and the disappearance of the ants they eat in spicy sauce, saying he had eaten plenty of ants on three visits to the region, as recently as last year.
"This is all a fraud, a deception," the professor said.

'Internet Doomsday' virus fizzles, web traffic flows
BOSTON (Reuters) - Fears that a computer virus might cut Internet access around the world appeared to be overblown on Monday after U.S. authorities removed a safety net that had protected infected machines for months.
Shortly after midnight EDT, the authorities cut off computer servers in New York City that had been put in place to direct traffic for infected computers, which would have been unable to access the Internet without their help.
Some blogs and news reports had warned that the shutdown of the servers could Nike Free 7.0 Dame trigger a potential "blackout" and described the malicious software as the "Internet Doomsday" virus.
But that did not happen.
"All quiet," said Barry Greene, a security consultant who volunteers with the DNS Changer Working Group, an ad-hoc group of experts who teamed up to help fight the virus and educate the public about how to eradicate it.
The working group was using the incidence of service calls to Internet providers as a barometer for measuring the impact of the sever shutdowns.
As of Monday afternoon New York time, providers had seen no increase in call volume.
"The outreach campaign has reached everyone humanly possible," Greene said.
Victims of the virus originally required assistance because the virus had changed settings on their PCs, diverting Internet traffic through rogue servers that showed them advertisements. Police shut them down in November.
Infected machines would have been unable to access the Web unless they were repaired, so authorities put the backup system in place as a stopgap measure.
As of Sunday, the number of machines using the clean servers was down to 211,000, with about 42,000 in the United States, according to the FBI.
That is a tiny fraction of the world's more than 1 billion Internet users, said Luis Corrons Granel, technical director with the research lab of anti-virus software maker Panda Security. "Not a big impact," he said.
The number of users who actually lost Internet service was likely far fewer Nike Free Run 2 Dame than the 211,000 who accessed the temporary server on Sunday, said Hypponen, of F Secure.
That is because many Internet service providers, including AT&T Inc and Time Warner Cable, set up their own servers so their customers with infected machines could continue to access the Internet.
"It's the 9th of July, and the Internet has not exploded into bits and pieces," remarked one Twitter user.
The United States has charged seven people with orchestrating the worldwide Internet fraud. Six were arrested in Estonia, while the seventh, who was living in Russia, is still at large. Estonia has extradited two of the men to New York, where they appeared in Manhattan federal court.
The case is USA v. Tsastsin et al, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-cr-878.

Rio byder velkommen
