Tigers left fielder Delmon Young apologized to his team and fans Friday, before being arraigned on a hate crime harassment charge stemming from a fight at a New York hotel during which police say he yelled anti-Semitic epithets.
Young posted $5,000 bond at a hearing in Manhattan court and was released less than an hour before the Tigers' loss to the Yankees. He was not in the lineup.
He faces a misdemeanor aggravated harassment charge that entails targeting someone for his or her religious beliefs. If convicted, he could face up to a year in jail.
Police said Young was outside the team's hotel at 2:30 a.m. Friday when he became involved in an altercation that included four Chicago tourists and a panhandler wearing a yarmulke and Star of David necklace.
In a statement, Young said: "I sincerely regret what happened last night. ... I take this matter very seriously and assure everyone that I will do everything I can to improve myself as a person and player."
Manager Jim Leyland snapped at a reporter who asked about Young after Detroit's fifth straight loss.
"Get lost, get lost, get lost," Leyland said. "Do yourself a favor and get lost."
Abreu cut: The struggling Angels released outfielder Bobby Abreu, a 38-year-old two-time All-Star who had been relegated to part-time duty and was batting .208 in 24 at-bats for the last-place team.
Abreu is in the last season of a $27 million, three-year contract.
Here's Harper: Bryce Harper, the 19-year-old outfielder who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft, will be recalled by the Nationals from Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday.
Harper will meet the Nationals in Los Angeles, where they are playing the Dodgers, and take the roster spot of third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, who is going on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right shoulder.
Briefly: Angels manager Mike Scioscia says Jordan Walden has been moved out of the closer's role and will be replaced by left-hander Scott Downs. ... Colorado Rockies pitcher Jeremy Guthrie is heading for the 15-day disabled list after injuring his pitching shoulder in a fall from his bicycle Friday.
